What is eCommerce PPC?

Pay-per-click (PPC) is an advertising method where you bid on target keywords related to your products. Users who search for these keywords will then see targeted ads showing your products.

For ecommerce paid search, you have the added channel of Google Shopping, where users see visual listings at the top of the search results, which are pulled from products in your shopping feed in Google Merchant Center.

In both cases, you will generally only pay for your ad if a user clicks on it, although if you’re also using display ads, these can use a CPM (cost per thousand impressions) model.

There is also Performance Max, which is a full-funnel paid search marketing tool. It uses AI and audience signals to convert customers, and covers a mix of search, Shopping, display, YouTube, Gmail and remarketing.

Clients We Work With…

Why PPC Matters for Ecommerce Retailers

In a crowded digital marketplace, it’s not enough just to be appearing in the organic results – between shopping listings and search ads, you’ve often got to scroll down before you see the organic results.

eCommerce PPC allows you to jump the queue, appearing in front of ‘ready-to-buy’ customers the moment they search.

And with a variety of platforms and ad types available to you, you can really showcase your products as they were meant to be seen, to highly targeted audiences, using high-intent keywords. You can run timebound campaigns for seasonal peaks or special offers and you can remarket to recover “lost” sales.

All of this also gives you a wealth of data that you can use to inform wider marketing campaigns, inventory management and business strategy.

Expertise in Ecommerce PPC Platforms

Microsoft Ads (Bing Ads)

Microsoft Ads is often overlooked, but can be very powerful – it’s especially good for B2B and as it makes use of LinkedIn audience targeting, you can get really granular. We help you get the best return on your ad spend through account audits, strong keyword targeting, expert bid management and ongoing refinement and testing.

Google Ads (formerly AdWords) & Google Shopping

We plan, build and manage Google Ads campaigns, conducting keyword research, creating compelling ads and optimising bids, targeting and performance data to increase conversions and maximise ROI. Alongside this, we set up and optimise Google Shopping campaigns, enhancing product feeds, structuring listings and using performance insights to boost visibility and attract ready-to-buy customers. We’ll also set up Performance Max campaigns, which use AI to deliver the best results across both channels.

Wormhole

Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram)

Get your products in front of your customers as they browse social media. We help businesses harness the power of Facebook and Instagram to get their products and services in front of the right audience. Reach your customers where they’re spending their time (and money) with targeted strategies and compelling creative. Meta’s catalogue ads can be particularly effective for ecommerce businesses.

Remarketing

Increase conversion rates by speaking to a qualified audience. We help you reach customers who’ve already shown an interest in your products, ensuring that your business is not forgotten, and reminding your almost-customers of the purchase they still need to make and who to purchase it from.

Display Advertising

Attract new audiences with display ads that get you noticed. We’ll build audiences that align with your ideal customer, using analytics, competitor research and your insights. We’ll also help encourage repeat purchases by targeting based on lists of previous customers.

Our Approach to eCommerce PPC Management

Account audits & structure

We’ll take a deep dive into your account, looking at your campaign structure, keywords, ad copy, targeting and more, and pinpoint areas for improvement. We’ll take out what’s not working and ensure your campaigns, ad groups and keywords follow a logical structure, rebuilding where needed, so that you have total control of your budget.

Keyword research

We’ll ensure that you target the keywords that will give you the best return on your ad spend (ROAS) and we’ll build negative keyword lists to exclude those that won’t lead to sales.

Ad copy & creative

Our team focuses on a blend of emotional triggers and functional benefits, highlighting your unique selling points, such as free shipping or limited-time offers, to boost your clickthrough rate (CTR). By constantly A/B testing headlines and calls to action, we discover exactly what resonates with your audience.

Bid management

We’ll optimise your ad spend, blending AI automation with human oversight to ensure you never overpay for a click or miss a high-value conversion. By analysing real-time data, such as device types, day or time and user location, we adjust bids dynamically to capture “ready-to-buy” traffic.

Location and audience targeting

Targeting the right locations and demographics is crucial if you’re going to succeed with paid search. We can set up targeting and create location and audience-specific campaigns to really drive sales.

Shopping feed optimisation

For Google Shopping campaigns, a well-optimised product feed is vital. We’ll make sure all your product information is listed, your product names and descriptions match what users are searching for, and your images are high-quality and relevant.

eCommerce PPC FAQs

eCommerce PPC focuses purely on paid search for businesses that sell online. So, rather than tracking leads or phone calls, the focus is on driving product sales and revenue. When creating campaigns we can drill down from campaign to ad group, keyword and product level to really figure out what works… and what doesn’t.

Yes. eCommerce PPC is one of the most effective marketing channels you can make use of if you’re a business that sells online. Here’s why:

  • It’s quick – you can set up campaigns and start seeing clicks and sales almost immediately – but you may not see a positive ROI for the first 1-3 months.
  • It’s high-intent – people searching for your products are ready to buy. Shopping ads are great in particular as the visitor can see the product and price right there in the SERPs.
  • You’re in control – paid search gives you complete control over your spend and you can launch and pause ads as needed, such as for special offers, or when products are out of stock.

It’s visible – search and shopping ads appear at the top of the SERPs. If you aren’t there, your competitors will be!

Absolutely. SEO and PPC work hand in hand. SEO is a more long-term strategy, focused on building brand visibility and authority over time and driving organic traffic to your website, while paid search can bring results faster.

By doing both, you can increase your visibility in the search results, appearing in both the paid and organic listings

There is also plenty that SEO and PPC can learn from each other. Paid ad copy that drives clicks can be used in title tags and meta descriptions, data can be shared between teams to better target keywords and SEO can provide insights into searcher behaviour and trends over time.

We focus on the following metrics when measuring PPC performance:

  • ROAS (return on ad spend): This is the most critical metric for eCommerce. We track exactly how much revenue is generated for every £1 you spend on ads.
  • CPA (cost per acquisition): We monitor the cost of acquiring a new customer to ensure your growth remains profitable and sustainable.
  • Conversion value: We don’t just look at the number of sales, but the total value of those orders, helping you identify which products are your “hero” earners.

While we also report on clicks and impressions, these are not the metrics that drive real business growth.

It really depends on your business. Targeting the right platforms is something we can help you with. But you do have a lot of options available.

We support businesses with Google Ads, Google Shopping, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Microsoft Advertising, display advertising and more.

You’ll start seeing clicks and conversions as soon as your campaigns go live. You’re unlikely to drive a positive ROAS in month 1, though. If you gather enough data and continually optimise your campaigns, you should see a positive ROAS between months 2-4.

While you can launch campaigns quickly and start driving sales, paid search is not always an instant success. It takes time, analysis and refinement, just like any other marketing channel.
