Iron & Velvet is a UK-based pioneer in the eco-cleaning sector, specialising in plastic-free, water-soluble cleaning sachets. Their innovative business model combines environmental sustainability with consumer convenience, utilising a refill-and-reuse system that encourages customers to move away from single-use plastics. By offering products through both one-off purchases and a recurring subscription model, they provide a continuous, zero-waste solution for household cleaning needs.

Iron & Velvet’s previous website was limiting growth rather than enabling it. The brand positioning and product quality were not reflected in the design, which reduced perceived value and trust. The user experience made it difficult for customers to quickly understand how the refill and subscription model worked, creating friction in the buying journey.
Conversion journeys were clunky across both desktop and mobile, with unnecessary steps and unclear pathways that increased drop-off. While subscription functionality existed, it was not central to the purchasing experience, meaning customers were often defaulting to one-off purchases rather than committing to recurring orders.
For a business built on repeat purchase and lifetime value, this created a direct barrier to revenue and scalability.
We approached the project as a commercial eCommerce transformation rather than a visual refresh. Our starting point was aligning the website with Iron & Velvet’s growth model, where subscription drives predictable revenue and customer lifetime value.
This meant restructuring journeys so that subscription became the natural and most compelling purchase route, while still allowing flexibility for one-off buyers. We simplified product architecture and messaging so customers could quickly understand the refill concept and the benefits of ongoing delivery.
At the same time, we elevated the brand presentation and trust signals to better reflect product quality and sustainability credentials. Every design and UX decision was made through the lens of reducing friction, increasing basket value and encouraging long-term customer relationships.
We designed and developed a fully bespoke WooCommerce website tailored specifically to Iron & Velvet’s subscription-led eCommerce model. The entire UX was re-centred around recurring purchase behaviour, with subscription positioned as the primary buying pathway throughout product, bundle and category experiences.
Product structure was reorganised around household needs and routines rather than individual SKUs, encouraging multi-product purchase and refill continuity. The refill model and sustainability proposition were explained more clearly and confidently, helping customers understand both how the system works and why it is beneficial.
Mobile journeys were prioritised to ensure browsing, product selection and checkout felt simple and intuitive on smaller screens, reflecting the brand’s consumer audience and usage patterns. The visual identity, imagery and content hierarchy were also elevated to strengthen perceived quality and reinforce credibility.
The new Iron & Velvet website now accurately reflects the quality and ambition of the brand while actively supporting its commercial model. The experience clearly communicates the refill and zero-waste proposition, makes subscription the natural purchase choice and reduces friction across devices.
Customers can now discover products more easily, understand the subscription benefits quickly and move through purchase journeys with minimal resistance. The platform provides a stronger foundation for recurring revenue, higher basket values and long-term lifetime value growth.
Most importantly, the website has shifted from being a barrier to sales to becoming a core driver of subscription adoption and ongoing customer relationships.
