When seeking out a work experience placement, I had a clear objective: I didn’t want to be a passive observer standing on the sidelines. As a first-year Business Management, Analysis, and Technology student, I am constantly looking to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world commercial execution. I wanted to look under the hood of a successful company and understand the engine that drives it.
My time at The Digital Maze delivered exactly that. Rather than a standard work experience placement, it was an immersive dive into the strategic, technological, and operational realities of a thriving digital agency.
As a business management student, one of the most invaluable aspects of my placement was gaining a macro-perspective of agency operations. I had the privilege of sitting in on the bi-weekly brand strategy meeting. This provided a front-row seat to high-level decision-making and strategic alignment.
It’s one thing to study organisational behaviour in a lecture hall, it’s another to witness firsthand how different digital marketing functions- from SEO to web development-seamlessly collaborate. Seeing how cross-departmental communication is successfully managed to drive growth was a masterclass in business collaboration and operations.
I was eager to experience the fundamental tools and platforms that dictate modern marketing success. During my time here, I was trusted with hands-on responsibilities that directly impacted the agency and its clients:
Analytics & Platforms: I explored the practical applications of Google Analytics and Mailchimp, gaining a clear understanding of how tracking data and utilising CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems directly inform overarching branding strategies.
Web Content & Optimisation: Using WordPress, I actively helped write and structure webpages for both The Digital Maze and its clients, learning the mechanics of how digital real estate is built, managed, and optimised for users.
Future-Proofing Operations: Crucially, I was introduced to how Artificial Intelligence is being actively integrated into agency workflows, a vital insight for understanding how companies maintain a competitive advantage in a fast-paced industry. I also had the opportunity to watch the end-to-end execution of a successful webinar, demonstrating the modern mechanics of lead generation and audience engagement.
A business is ultimately only as strong as its client relationships. By sitting in on a live customer meeting, I was able to observe the nuances of client management, expectation setting, and professional communication firsthand. Seeing how broad marketing strategies are actively adapted to meet a client's specific commercial objectives gave me a much deeper appreciation for the consulting and relationship-building side of the agency.
To say this experience was educational would be an understatement; it was a catalyst. Engaging with the entire team at The Digital Maze has only solidified my ambition to build a career in the commercial sector.
The dynamic mix of strategic marketing, client management, and daily operational execution perfectly complements the broad scope of my business degree. I am stepping away from this placement with sharpened skills, a fresh perspective on digital agency operations, and an even stronger drive to make an impact in the corporate world.
